▶ to say that charlotte has 'daddy issues' would be the understatement of the century. she was the product of a very scandalous affair between an affluent tech genius and a rising star in the fashion industry who was more than a decade his junior — charlotte's mere existence being enough to cause tension between her father's wife and his other children. had it not been for a ruthless tabloid reporter's exposé, he would've been content to pretend she didn't exist, quietly sending money along to ensure that while he wasn't there physically, he was still financially present in a way that allowed her to experience the same comforts as her half-siblings.
▶ happy family gatherings were nonexistent. there were no sunday dinners, or combined christmases, and while she knew about her siblings and had spent time with them in passing, the relationship between charlotte and her father's "other" family was really only present for the staged photo ops that made it seem like they were one big well-adjusted family. meanwhile, she and her mother lived in a large loft in tribeca — funded by her father's guilty conscience, but still far enough away from his home on the upper east side that they would be 'out of sight, out of mind'. it wasn't until she was 8 and the optics of being separate was starting to make her father look bad, that she and her mother started getting included in family activities.
▶ while her mother was leaps and bounds better than her father, she was too busy building her fledgling fashion brand to properly parent her daughter, and charlie found that small acts of rebellion were the best ways to get either of her parents to give her the time of day. by the time she was fourteen, she had been branded a problem child by five stuffy private schools, and was one more incident away from getting shipped off to a boarding school overseas.
▶ finally had a come to jesus moment, thanks to a teacher who saw that charlie had potential if she only focused her energy on something positive. it was strongly suggested that she start attending therapy, and as a previous failure at conventional methods, she fell into art therapy instead.
▶ her love of art blossomed, and she stopped trying (as often) to gain her mother's attention and her father's affection. she surrounded herself with quirky artsy friends who were labeled outcasts for no other reason than the fact that they avoided the things the popular kids enjoyed (parties, wearing the latest most fashionable thing, etc.), and from there, she found her tribe. graduated with a solid b average, and got accepted into the art program at nyu, setting her on her current path where she still struggles, but is working hard to find her happiness in herself and not other people.
confident. mischievous. loyal. always has wanderlust. honest. obsessed with her dog. obsessed with your dog. spontaneous. perpetually in a state of 'yeah, i could eat'. flirtatious. flighty. opinionated. hates being told what to do. overly affectionate. quick facts
▶ is technically a trust fund kid, but doesn't want to talk about it.
▶ has a barely there relationship with her father, and her relationship with her half-siblings isn't much better. the only one that seems to give her the time of day is gabe, who is the closest to her in age.
▶ was a troublemaker in school because she was trying to get her parents' attention. ended up getting kicked out of 5 schools, and the only reason it wasn't bigger news was because her father made sizable donations to each on her way out the door.
▶ found her love of art through therapy. completely due to the kind teacher that saw she needed a positive outlet for her feelings about her shitty family dynamics.
▶ everyone assumes she zoomed through college because of her age, but because of where her birthday falls, she actually graduated high school at 17. fell into an internship during her senior year at nyu with moma, and then followed her favorite curator when they eventually took at job at the museum of sex.
▶ like most lifelong new yorkers, she doesn't know how to drive. if she's not in the back of an uber, or on the subway, she's usually taking her skateboard or her e-bike.
▶ as she's gotten older (and her mother's business has stabilized), charlie is much closer to her mom. is extremely close to her step-father, who's been in the picture off and on since she was very little, but finally married her mother in late 2016.
